Variety in Ashburton's baby names
When it comes to naming babies, for new mums and dads in the Ashburton District, variety is just part of the name game.
While tradition might rule when it comes to first names for some parents, for others the name their child will carry through life is as wild and as wide as their imagination.
For baby boys, whose birth announcement in the Guardian carried their name, Jack was a run away winner, with 12 new Ashburtonians carrying this name.
Tradition continued to rule with Thomas or Tom coming next for six babies, followed by Nicholas and William at five apiece.
Also high in the popularity stakes were Harrison, Patrick and Samuel or Sam.
Last year’s winner was Matthew.
When it came to second names for baby boys, James was most popular on 10, followed by William on eight and David on five.
Other second name favourites were Alexander, Francis, John, Paul, Thomas and George. James was also number one as a second name in 2004.
For some little boys starting school in five years’ time, it is almost certain they will be one of a kind in their classroom.
Archer, Oleg, Vadym, Floyd, Rafel, Calem, and Mathias were among the more unusual, one-off names given in 2005.
About 100 different first names were given to baby boys.
Parents of baby girls were also into tradition and olde worlde names.
Charlotte for the second year in a row topped the poll with seven new babies carrying this name.
Sophie, Jessica and Sarah followed with five each with Grace or Gracie on four and Laura on three.
Many old style names were given to baby girls in 2005 – Amelia, Millie, Hazel and Lily were just a few of these.
Most popular second name for girls was Jayne or Jane, 11, followed by Anne or Ann, seven, Grace or Gracie, six and Rose, five.
There were a host of unusual names or names with unusual spellings given to baby girls – Ciara, Ayla, Shyllah, Allizay, Khyl, Bree, Aisling, Kori, Ashanti, Bronte, Harmony, Madori and Taneka some of these.
More than 115 different first names were given to baby girls.
